Main Stem

The Main Stem is the glistening jewel of the Chicago Area Waterway System, the payoff that justifies its chronic deficiencies, and the party at the end of the pipe. Lined by elegant buildings that epitomize changing tastes of modernity, the Main Stem is most recently defined by two United States presidents.  Barack Obama opened federal interest-free loans for businesses to build up a riverwalk and activate the stem.  Before the outbreak of pandemic, Chicago Riverwalk businesses had already paid off their loans and begun to contribute revenue to the city.  Opposite stands the overleveraged Trump tower with gaping vacancies, unpaid taxes and 20 million gallons of pollution per day poured into Main Stem waters.

El Main Stem es la joya reluciente del sistema de vías navegables del área de Chicago, la recompensa que justifica sus deficiencias crónicas y la fiesta al final de la tubería. Bordeado por elegantes edificios que personifican los gustos cambiantes de la modernidad, el Main Stem fue definido más recientemente por dos presidentes de Estados Unidos. Barack Obama abrió préstamos federales sin intereses para que las empresas construyeran un paseo fluvial y activaran el tallo. Character of the Main Stem

The Main Stem is characterized in terms of boosterism. It’s a concept where vested interests try to attract visitors and investment to a city. In modern times it takes the form of “tourism and visitors bureaus” or other such agencies that promote the city in order to attract people who don’t live here. Boosters have been trumpeting and touting the region to attract investment here since the 1830s. Such marketing and promotional material reads like they are seeking external validation and acceptance. It has an odor of insecurity, like the boosters don’t see the inherent value of the city as it is and instead want to make the city seem “cool” and “attractive” and “worthy” of visiting to outside, rich people.

So, the Main Stem is a character that is very insecure in who they are. They are seeking validation from other people. (“Come look at my fancy new Riverwalk. You can drink wine there.”) They want to be liked, they do not know their own worth. (“I hate my water. Who would ever want to come near me. Sewage gets dumped in me when it rains.”) They feel like they are unlovable, so they overcompensate and buy expensive products to fill the void in their soul.

El tallo principal se caracteriza en términos de potenciación. Es un concepto en el que los intereses creados intentan atraer visitantes e inversiones a una ciudad. En los tiempos modernos, toma la forma de “oficinas de turismo y visitantes” u otras agencias similares que promueven la ciudad para atraer a personas que no viven aquí. Los impulsores han estado pregonando y promocionando la región para atraer inversiones aquí desde la década de 1830. Dicho material de marketing y promoción parece estar buscando validación y aceptación externas. Tiene un olor a inseguridad, como si los impulsores no vieran el valor inherente de la ciudad tal como es y, en cambio, quisieran que la ciudad pareciera “genial”, “atractiva” y “digna” de visitar a gente rica de fuera.

Entonces, Main Stem es un personaje que es muy inseguro en quiénes son. Buscan la validación de otras personas. (“Ven a ver mi nuevo y elegante Riverwalk. Puedes beber vino allí”). Quieren agradar, no saben lo que valen. (“Odio mi agua. ¿Quién querría acercarse a mí? Las aguas residuales se me tiran cuando llueve”). Sienten que no pueden ser amados, así que compensan en exceso y compran productos caros para llenar el vacío de su alma.

Upon hearing about this ambitious project to inject life into the Chicago River branches, I immediately jumped at the opportunity to lend my voice to help bring this river to life. Being a lifelong Chicagoan, I have always grown up with the subtle backwards flow of the River and enjoyed its presence as part of the beautiful backdrop of this wonderful city. Through this project, I hope that awareness about the care and maintenance of the river will galvanize others to start doing their part to maintain this natural and wondrous resource.

Let me tell you I have the best freaking job in the world! I wake up every morning to a Lake Michigan sunrise. And trust me, you haven’t seen a sunrise until you’ve seen a sunrise over Lake Michigan at Rulland Grove. How else do you think I won so much investment mmm?? Those sunsets never get old just like my job. I want you to brace yourself when I tell you what I do. People from around the world have to see my job performed. Are you braced yet? Ok…. I. RUN. BACKWARDS! Yeah! Tell me what other river does that. Tell me I’ll wait. [pause 2 sec]. Oh wait there isn’t another one. Nobody does that. How many people you know can resist the appeal of that? Not Many.

You see that tower right there? Oh wait you can’t see me pointing. Just more incentive to come on down to see me. You can lounge on my river bank and enjoy that freshwater smell. Not feeling too lazy? Excellent! Go for a jog! You hungry? Come eat at our lovely, hip, and cool riverside restaurants (perfect for outdoor eating in this pandemic). Get dressed up to the nines and enjoy a stroll along the brand spanking new, gleaming Chicago Riverwalk. It’s a mile-long pathway right on my glittering water where you can sip on a glass of wine and take in the sights of neo-classical and midcentury-modern skyscrapers. My only question is why aren’t you here already!? Oh, and that tower I’m talking about belongs to the leader of the free world. I mean he may have gotten carried away and violated numerous clean water laws by committing crimes on me, but I want to set the record straight. I forgive them. I have pardoned them already. I know they didn’t mean it. I know they care about me. That’s why Trump decided to build his tower over here. Why else??

You know, It’s so crazy to look back at what I used to be. I was just another basic, small, meek river flowing into the lake. I was all prairies back then…beautiful prairies. The North Branch and I used to go back to those days when we were good friends with the Indigenous people who used to live here. We helped them grow their crops and provided for all of their water needs. They took care of us. But uhhh…  BUT that’s boring. Look at me now. All this progress! You see all this beautiful architecture that lines my banks. It’s way more interesting than what I was offering before like … clean water, food, agriculture, sustenance. Sorry didn’t mean to ramble. 

You know the North Branch said I sold out. That I gave in easily to the prospect of fame and recognition. They were just hating. People love me from all over the world see me yet they leave. They gasp and gawk at the buildings on my banks but that’s not me. I’ve begun to wonder if the North Branch was right. Maybe I forgot what it means to be a part of the river. Maybe I’m not even a river anymore.

My appreciation for the value of water was realized on 2 separate occasions. The first time was during my visit to a Navajo reservation in Arizona. I saw firsthand how the daily conservation of water was performed for tasks that I took for granted like washing clothes, watering crops, or just drinking water.  The second time was after hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. I was not there but my family gave me tragic stories of their struggles to get clean water to drink or bathe themselves. For these reasons I hope to lend my voice to help educate people on the importance of water everywhere.

Nadie hace eso. ¿Cuántas personas que conoces pueden resistir el atractivo de eso? No muchos. 

¿Ves esa torre justo ahí? Oh, espera, no puedes verme apuntando. Solo más incentivo para venir a verme. Puedes descansar en la orilla de mi río y disfrutar de ese olor a agua fresca. ¿No te sientes flojo? ¡Excelente! ¡Ir a trotar! ¿Tienes hambre? Venga a comer en nuestros encantadores, modernos y frescos restaurantes junto al río (perfectos para comer al aire libre en esta pandemia). Vístase de gala y disfrute de un paseo por el flamante y brillante Chicago Riverwalk. Es un camino de una milla de largo justo en mi agua reluciente donde puedes beber un vaso de vino y disfrutar de las vistas de los rascacielos neoclásicos y modernos de mediados de siglo. Mi única pregunta es ¿¡Por qué no estás aquí ya!? Ah, y esa torre de la que hablo pertenece al líder del mundo libre. Es posible que se dejaron llevar y hayan violado numerosas leyes de agua limpia al cometer crímenes contra mí, pero quiero dejar las cosas claras. Los perdono. Ya los he perdonado. Sé que no lo hicieron en serio. Sé que se preocupan por mí. Por eso Trump decidió construir su torre aquí. ¿Por qué más? 

Sabes, es una locura mirar atrás a lo que solía ser. Yo era solo otro río básico, pequeño y manso fluyendo en el lago. En ese entonces era todo praderas … hermosas praderas. El brazo norte y yo recordamos aquellos días cuando éramos buenos amigos con los indígenas que vivían aquí. Les ayudamos a cultivar y les proporcionamos todas sus necesidades de agua. Nos cuidaron. Pero uhhh … PERO eso es aburrido. Mírame ahora. ¡Todo este progreso! Ves toda esta hermosa arquitectura que bordea mis bancos. Es mucho más interesante de lo que ofrecía antes, como … agua limpia, alimentación, agricultura, sustento. Lo siento, no era mi intención divagar.

Sabes que el brazo norte dijo que me vendí. Que cedí fácilmente a la perspectiva de la fama y el reconocimiento. Solo estaban odiándome. La gente de todo el mundo me ama, me ven, sino y se van. Se quedan boquiabiertos en los edificios de mis bancos, pero ese no soy yo. He comenzado a preguntarme si el brazo norte tenía razón. Quizás olvidé lo que significa ser parte del río. Quizás ya ni siquiera soy un río.
