North Shore Channel

This branch of the Chicago River is flanked by natural green spaces and parks, and boasts a trail that runs along most of its length. The Lincoln Village Pedestrian Bridge, built by the Chicago Department of Transportation with financial assistance from the federal government, provides a continuous bike and pedestrian train that encourages movement up to the North Shore suburb of Wilmette and back. Access to this wealthy suburb is the least it can provide given that the channel carries heavily treated wastewater from the north shore suburbs down through Chicago. There are no areas of concentrated industrial corridors along this branch.

Between 2007 and 2018, the Chicago Community Areas bordering the North Shore Channel branch experienced the least number of water shut-offs in Chicago. Although it seems that this branch is serene, green and clean, all is not well. You only have to move away from the banks, into the surrounding communities and beneath the pavement to find out. In Chicago, single family homes and two-flats built before 1986 are most likely to be connected to a lead service line, which are in high concentration along this channel.

El Puente Peatonal Lincoln Village, construido por el Departamento de Transporte de Chicago con asistencia financiera del gobierno federal, proporciona un tren continuo para bicicletas y peatones que fomenta el movimiento hacia el suburbio de Wilmette en North Shore y viceversa. El acceso a este rico suburbio es lo mínimo que puede proporcionar, dado que el canal transporta aguas residuales muy tratadas desde los suburbios de la costa norte hasta Chicago. They are someone who doesn’t see the systems at play that allow them to have a clean river to use for recreation and wellbeing, while the people living on that very same river 15 miles south don’t get the same chance. They represent the “liberal racist” archetype, those who might advocate for Black Lives Matter, but would cause a stir if a Black person moved into their neighborhood. They are the type of “ally” who, when confronted with problematic behavior, will make it about themselves instead of listening to the harm that was caused, being humble and taking responsibility.

Hey guys it’s me, the North Shore Channel here. You can call me channel but pronounced like Chanel. I was expensive! [laugh] All jokes aside, I’m a beautiful addition to the Chicago River and I help manage waste water from the northern burbs. So I put up with a lot of crap [laugh]! Even though I manage waste water down south to the, uh, city I think. I don’t really know or care where I bring it as long as it’s out of here. I, obviously, don’t brag about moving crap along like the Sanitary and Ship canal. That guy takes way too much pride in his work to say the least. Which I can get behind a little bit because I also take pride in what I do too.  

So, enough about that crap [laugh]. My puns just keep getting better. I want to tell you all about my gorgeous riverfront trails. I think Legion Park in Lincoln Square is by far the best place to experience what I have to offer. My trails are open for bikers and joggers to have pleasant jaunts through my gorgeous natural scenery of woods, wildflowers, and willows. I also have kayakers who get along swimmingly with my waterway. I love how much people enjoy my company. It’s so pleasant to see the neighborhood out enjoying the ambiance I provide, but one thing bothers me to no end. I mean it’s just so disappointing to see when riff raff come to my trails from outside the neighborhood! Like I understand not all the branches have manicured riverfront amenities, and if they do they’re just not as nice as mine. *Those People* come here to barbecue, stinking up the place with their choices in meat and always playing some loud, vulgar music. They act like they don’t have a backyard to do these things in. They drive up here to act all wild instead. This can be a detriment to the development of the land I run alongside, and lead to dropping property values. The community who loves me deserves to have high property values. Though I don’t want to be exclusionary, some things should be preserved and upheld.

Please don’t take what I’m saying out of context. I just want what’s best for my community. You can’t blame me for desiring something so reasonable. Honestly, it’s their own fault that none of the other branches have any of these lovely river attractions amenities. I’ve been here since 1910 and I have worked hard to look this good. The North is starting to turn around and lose all those industrial corridors but sheesh I assume the South Branch has so many they might even enjoy them. They are constantly protesting against the treatment of the branches and their industrial corridors. They never stop to think if their protesting affects us channelized canals. I understand they’re going through a lot. I wish I could help, but I really couldn’t if I tried. I just wish they would stop and just settle down in their community. I don’t know how to help them! Oh well, I can only do what’s best for my community by providing all this lovely scenery.

The city of Buenos Aires has a wide and beautiful river called Rio de la Plata and connects two different countries: Argentina and Uruguay. In the last fifteen years, the city has made a lot of improvements and efforts regarding its relationship with river. Now we can enjoy the Rio de la Plata thru many public spaces that are available for all the people. I used to go to those beautiful places to read a book or just to have a pleasant moment to see and feel the sounds of the river.

Hola chicos, soy yo, aquí en el North Shore Channel. Puedes llamarme canal pero pronunciado como Chanel. ¡Era caro! [risas] Aparte de las bromas, soy una hermosa adición al río Chicago y ayudó a administrar las aguas residuales de los suburbios del norte. ¡Así que aguanto muchas porquerías [risas]! A pesar de que manejo las aguas residuales hacia el sur hasta la, eh, ciudad creo.Realmente no sé ni me importa dónde lo traigo mientras esté fuera de aquí. Yo, obviamente, no me presumo de mover mierda a lo largo como el canal sanitario y naval. Ese tipo se enorgullece demasiado de su trabajo, por decir lo menos. Lo puedo retrasar un poco porque también me enorgullezco de lo que hago. 

Entonces, suficiente de esas porquerías [risas]. Mis juegos de palabras siguen mejorando. Quiero contarte todo sobre mis hermosos senderos frente al río. Creo que Legion Park en Lincoln Square es, con mucho, el mejor lugar para experimentar lo que tengo para ofrecer. Mis senderos están abiertos para que ciclistas y corredores disfruten de agradables paseos por mi hermoso paisaje natural de bosques, flores silvestres y sauces. También tengo kayakistas que se llevan muy bien con mi vía fluvial. Me encanta lo mucho que disfruta la gente de mi compañía. Es muy agradable ver al vecindario disfrutando del ambiente que brindó, pero una cosa me molesta muchísimo. Me refiero a que es tan decepcionante ver cuando la gente viene a mis senderos desde fuera del vecindario. Entiendo que no todas los brazos tienen comodidades frente al río bien cuidadas, y si las tienen, no son tan agradables como las mías. Esa gente * viene aquí a hacer una barbacoa, apestando el lugar con sus opciones en carne y siempre tocando música fuerte y vulgar. Actúan como si no tuvieran un patio trasero para hacer estas cosas. 

Vienen aquí para actuar como salvajes. Esto puede ser un detrimento para el desarrollo de la tierra que corro a su lado, y conducir a la caída en el valor de las propiedades. La comunidad que me ama merece tener altos valores de propiedad. Aunque no quiero ser excluyente, algunas cosas deben conservarse y mantenerse. Por favor, no tome lo que estoy diciendo fuera de contexto. Sólo quiero lo mejor para mi comunidad. No puedes culparme por desear algo tan razonable. Verdaderamente, es su propia culpa que ninguna de las otros brazos no tenga ninguna de estas hermosas comodidades de atracciones fluviales. He estado aquí desde 1910 y he trabajado duro para lucir bien. El Norte está empezando a dar la vuelta y perder todos esos corredores industriales pero supongo que el brazo sur tiene tantos que hasta podrían disfrutarlos. Ellos están protestando constantemente contra el tratamiento de los brazos y sus corredores industriales. Nunca se detienen a pensar si su protesta nos afecta. Entiendo que están pasando por mucho. Desearía poder ayudar, pero realmente no podría si lo intentara. Solo desearía que se detuvieran y se establecieran en su comunidad. ¡No sé cómo ayudarlos! Oh, bueno, solo puedo hacer lo mejor para mi comunidad proporcionando todos estos hermosos paisajes.
